LILITH: THE GODDESS

WHO IS LILITH?

There are many different interpretations of Lilith. When I browsed the web, researched her in books, or watch movies with a "Lilith" character, I became confused about what the prevailing interpretation about her was. I have reached this conclusion: Lilith is like a kalidoscope . . . her interpretation (like beauty) depends on the perspective of the person who is looking at her.

With all that said, Lilith has a rich mythology of her own.
In the book, Moon Magic, D.J. Conway writes:

LILITH/LILITHU (Hebrew, Babylonia, Sumeria): Moon Goddess; the patroness of witches; female principle of the universe; demon goddess to the Jews and Christians. Her sacred bird was the owl. Her name may have come from the Sumerio-Babylonian goddess Belit-ili or Belili. A tablet from Ur, about 2,000 BCE, mentions the name Lillake. Protectress of all pregnant women, mothers, and children. Wisdom, regeneration, enticing sorcery, feminine allure, erotic dreams, forbidden delights, the dangerous seductive qualities of the Moon (p. 281).

In recent years, many books have been published which try to cast her into a mold. Since so many books have been written about her, and few of them agree, Lilith has defied the overwhelming attepts to catagorize her. She has become a feminist symbol because (according to Jewish lore), she was the first wife of Adam, refused to be submissive (especially in sex), and left the Garden of Eden. Her independant spirit, feminine strength, and conviction make her an attractive deity.

WHY I WORSHIP LILITH

I worship Lilith primarilly because I admire her qualities, can relate to her struggles, and feel a deep connection to her. I first stumbled across references to her during my research for my Vampire book, as one explanation to the genisis of vampires. Ever since, I have worshipped Lilith. I currently have two altars for her. I create artwork in various mediums and conduct ceremonies to honor her. She has helped give me the strength to fight for what I believe is right and to become the independant woman I am.
